The right-handed Indian opener, Shubman Gill, became the fastest player to complete 2,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) during the match against New Zealand in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, on Sunday.

Gill, 24, only needed 14 runs to achieve this milestone before the game.

The promising batter scored 26 runs and lost his wicket to Lockie Ferguson as the home side continued their chase of 274 runs.

Gill reached this milestone in the 38th innings, overtaking the legendary South African batter, Hashim Amla, who scored 2000 runs in ODI cricket in 40 innings.

Gill now has six centuries and 10 fifties to his name in 38 ODI matches since making his international debut in 2019. He has also scored a double century in ODIs and has become an integral part of Indian cricket team set-up across formats.

Currently ranked number two ODI batter, Gill missed India’s first two games of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 due to illness, preventing him from improving his rankings.

But he marked his return in the most anticipated match of the World Cup between Pakistan and India and has been playing since then, scoring a half-century against Bangladesh in Pune as well.

Earlier this month, Gill was named the ICC Player of the Month for September 2023.

The 24-year-old had an outstanding September, showcasing his exceptional batting skills first in the Asia Cup and then during the three-match ODI series against Australia, where he played in two matches.

Gill emerged as the highest run-scorer of the Asia Cup, amassing an impressive total of 302 runs at an average of 75.5. His highest score in the multi-nation tournament was 121, achieved against Bangladesh.

The right-handed batter carried forward his exceptional form, scoring 178 runs in two innings against Australia, including a century in the second ODI. This performance sent a clear message to the cricketing world that he is in prime form for the World Cup.

In the month of September, Gill registered three half-centuries and two centuries, being dismissed for less than fifty only twice.
